Arasakattalai another story

April 1, 2008

Sathyaraja Films produced “Arasakattalai” directed by M.G.Chakrapani. The story of the movie is to put an end to monarchy. MGR in the leading role with good songs, the Heroine are Saroja Devi and Jayalalitha. I have written earlier in one of my post about the climax scene in the movie Arasakattalai, that according to the movie the end was death of Saroja Devi and MGR marrying Jayalalitha. But the other climax is MGR marrying Saroja Devi and Jayalalitha becoming a saint. That much MGR Fans know, but there is another story R.S.Manohar is the main villain he was helped by M.G.Chakrapani. Due to the length of the film M.G.Chakrapani character was deleted. Keep in mind that M.G.Chakrapani is the Director of the movie and MGR is also the brother of M.G.Chakrapani, but the scenes are deleted.

The image was forwarded by Jr.MGR Pradeep Balu.

MGC with Manohar

Other Actor Fans say that when some one acts more than MGR he will delete the scenes, what they will say to this? Whenever there is need to give a grip (Cinema term) to the movie unnecessary scenes are deleted or cut short. This is the reality.

The picture shows that Manohar giving a “Porkizhi” to M.G.Chakrapani, the costume used by M.G.Chakrapani looks like he is a ‘Raja Guru’.

MGR’s Unfinished movies II

March 12, 2008

By the end of 1969 MGR went on to make a movie under the Banner MGR Productions “Inaintha Kaigal”. The story was inspired from a Hindi film Prithiviraj Kapoor’s “Daktha Mansoor”. The story is real one from the life of Muslim Chief Mansoor who lived in Iran.

Arrangements were made the story draft was changed 3 times before it went on to shooting stage. N.T.Ramarao was booked for the Telugu version of this movie. A grand function was held in Sathya studios on the first day shooting of the movie, presided by Kalaignar Karunanidhi. The crew involved in this movie are M.S.Viswanathan – Music, Lyrics by Vali and Pulavar Vedha, Camera by V.Ramamurthy, Story – Syed Hajah Mohideen alias Ravindran, Dialogues by Sornam, Jambu for Editing, Stunts by Shyam Sundar, Arts by Anga Muthu and Direction by Chanakya.

The Ad placed in Daily Thanthi

Story : Mansoor was born in Royal family, circumstances make Mansoor and his mother get separated from the family. Mansoor was raised by a Poor man named Moosa. Mansoor becomes a thief for living. Years roll by, Mansoor helps the poor and needy by giving them food, care and money, and stand for their cause and against the reigning King. An incident happens that he becomes changed man when he falls in Love with a girl who is a princess. Her father is Harun Al Rashid. Mansoor gets to know his birth mystery. He get assisted by his Lover. A greater task was kept in front of Mansoor to provide water to her Kingdom. He triumphantly performs the task by breaking the mountain with that he gets to know about his Mother and finds her and finally the throne he rightly owned.

MGR planned to introduce Iranian Actress as the heroine for this movie.

Four songs were recorded three usual movie songs and one lengthy Kavali type song. The songs such as

a. Nilavu Oru Pennagi (the song was used in Ulagam Sutrum Valiban – MGR and Manjula)

b. Aval Oru Navarasa Nadagam (this song also used in Ulagam Sutrum Valiban – MGR and Latha the one with water ballad)

c. Konjam Neram Ennai Marenthan (this song was used in Sirithu Vazha Vendum – MGR and Latha, remember both of them in lots of costumes for that song)

A forest set was made in Sathya Studio and shots were taken as MGR saving four girls and some dialogue scene between MGR and orphan children.

MGR and Geethanjali in Inaintha Kaigal

When the shots in studio were completed MGR asked Chitra Krishnasamy to get the permission from the Iran Government to shoot the movie in their country. The situation changed when Chitra Krishnasamy went to meet the Government they asked the story, after reading the story they denied permission. The reason the then Iran country was ruled by a King, it is capital punishment to mock a King or telling a story a thief becoming a King. King and Queen are highly placed and they do not want such a story to be shot in their country. Chitra Krishnasamy returned home and he told the sad story.

Story writer had a chance meeting Fartheen an International actor who is also one of the member from the Royal Family and asked can he do any help regarding picturising the movie. He firmly said you can ask the King to give the greatest treasures from his kingdom but not this kind of story. We are very strict we did not like disrespecting the King and Queen. You might have seen that all the foreign movies running in Iran are dubbed and released in Persian language. The Censor board is very powerful than our Police. I cannot help regarding this movie.

Then MGR made a 4th draft changing the back drop to India. Some characters are to be deleted and new ones to be created. When M.G.Chakrapani was asked to take the role of the King Rashid he did not accept and went on to take the role of Poor Moosa. He acted in the role of raising the child character Mansoor because he desired to raise MGR’s son in real life but that did not happen for that he wanted to act as Poor Moosa to raise MGR’s son in reel life. 5th draft was made and Actress Geethanjali acted with MGR for some scenes.

The movie was dropped the reason unknown then MGR went on to make “Ulagam Sutrum Valiban”.

MGR asked the story department for lavishness in the movie. Imagine the scene of breaking the mountain and the rushing water in those days. 3 Dream songs in Iranian back drop. The sets are inspired from Arabian Nights story. Costumes that MGR used is very different and shows individuality. Apart from the head dress MGR keeps the knife in his throat.

MGR One in One Thousand

July 25, 2007

Padmini Pictures Ayirathil Oruvan was released in 1965. Jayalalitha as MGR’s heroine. Due to the huge response by the crowd this pair continued to act together for nearly 27 films.

Ayirathil Oruvan was a 100 days film depicting the life of Slaves and atrocities of the Dictator. And how MGR acted as a Doctor liberates his motherland.
This movie was released again two months back in Chennai City. Though the print was not good the cinema halls were crowded.

Pictures below represents the participation of MGR Fans in several Theatres in Chennai city.

The film distributors had erected captivating cut outs and digital banners and spent lavishly in film advertisement, daily big sized ad was placed in Daily Thanthi which I had uploaded in my previous blog.
Images represents the participation of MGR fans in several theatres in Chennai City. Captivating cut outs and Banners are kept by the film distributors.
Not only MGR fans kept various Banners and garlanded them, Actor Sathayaraj has kept a banner to MGR in Kamala Theatre.

Ulagam Sutrum Valiban Info

July 4, 2007

The footage used by MGR in foreign locations came to 80,000 feet. Out of these 10,000 feet were used for back ground scenes. MGR further deleted some 20,000 feet of the footage. But the duration of the film was over 4 ½ hours. He asked Sankar Director as well as Good Editor to trim the movie. After Sankar’s work the Foreign footage came to 40,000 feet. that is what we see today in the Ulagam Sutrum Valiban.

And what happened to deleted footage? And what the story will be? And were is the remaining negative. Many film that are released DVD nowadays have included deleted scenes. Some movies are again released as Special Edition have not before seen footages, Alternate ending and deleted scenes. Can MGR fans have a chance to peek the remaining portion? God Only Knows.

MGR has habit of spending lavishly for his own productions. Not to say Ulagam Sutrum Valiban his own production! He spent nearly 4 lakhs for the Water ballad for shooting (only shooting the real water ballad and not the matching shots that he took in Satya Studios with a large Glass Tank)

Catering is another Budget for his movies, his crew has spent Rs.80,000/- in Hilton Hotel, Japan in a day for Ice Creams, remember it was in 1970-71. What could be cost now?

On completion of this movie MGR’s home and all his properties were under Mortgage. The success gave the difference. The Budget got high because the negative were sabotaged and to make it up he has to recreate most of the scenes that are shot in Singapore, including the Tiger Balm Gardens, Beach Outdoor etc.

To be continued

Fights in Ulagam Sutrum Valiban

June 9, 2007

The First fight scene in Ulagam Sutrum Valiban takes place in a Hotel. This fight is good example for continuity and editing. MGR used tight close up for Manohar whenever he gets hit by MGR. His face swollen looks funny.

Click to view the fight scene between MGR and R.S.Manohar:

The second fight is with Justin in time for saving damsel in distress. The action takes place in make up room. MGR uses wresting technique to out wit Justin.

The Third action scene comes very late nearly hour, not noticeable in the movie. Action scene appearing late in MGR movie is very rare. The fight according to story is between Scientists so less action more comical.

Photo showing MGR in air.

The Fourth action scene is the highlight of the film to me. This kind of fight scene is very rare in Tamil movies. Nambiyar character is not in the story at first later he was included in the script which gave a nice grip to the story. Even though Nambiyar scenes are just 10-15 minutes in the story, but he was to take revenge in the Second part of Ulagam Sutrum Valiban (Kizhaku Aprivakil Raju) His greedy eyes and ferocious gestures resembles a Lion, his prowess and his teeth are still in my memory. His action to get the brief case containing the formula is noteworthy.

A perfect kick: (The entire fight scenes of this movie was shot in 1972-73 at the age of 55 and MGR was ailing from Cataract problem)

In one of the kick shot performed by MGR, after several times of video pausing revealed the rising frame is MGR and kick in the mid air and landing is done by MGR’s stunt double. Who is it?

The climax fight of MGR roller skates shows not only MGR fighting talent but MGR’s Editing and camera technique. The stunt double of MGR is perfect fit. MGR used a transparent black cloth to cover his face which is very useful in close up shots that did not reveal the stunt double. The reality of this fight is that MGR did not skate for one time, YES not even one time – but looks like he did the skating, said by V.Gopalakrishnan who acted as the Doctor.

MGR a mystery

April 17, 2007

I was reading thread dedicated to Nadigar Thilagam (Sivaji Ganesan) the MGR’s arch rival in Film (only) and one person named Rakeshkumar with his website ( gave an entire page about all important actors of World Cinema including Sivaji Ganesan, I was disappointed at first why not MGR, he is not worth to be included. I wrote to him, he gave the reply – the reply which showed his Love to MGR. the mail follows:

As you may have noticed, my website is mostly about Hollywood and I try to write as much as I can on Tamizh film industry.

I am crazy about Sivaji. Period. I used to be an MGR fan (from before his death), but I ceased to be interested in him as an artiste. Nowadays, I am more interested in him as a person. He is a mysterious figure. I don’t think anyone really knows who he is. Only he does. And I try to read about him. But unfortunately, all I read is what we all know….how a good samaritan he is, how he helped others, etc.

I want more information. And I don’t know. I think of myself as a student of a subject called MGR. A great, mysterious subject that takes volumes of encyclopedia to describe.

Of course, when time comes I’d like to write about MGR in my site. As far as actors are concerned, there are four major stars who have impacted the industry – MGR, Sivaji, Kamal and Rajini. I will certainly be writing about them one of these days. But as you may have noticed, my site has not been updated for a long time. When I am active again, I shall write about him.

(The thread about MGR)

My Letter to Puratchi Thalaivar, Makkal Tilagam M.G. Ramachandran.

“Irunthaalum Marainthaalum, peer solla vendum,
Ivar poola yaarendru, uur solla vendum
Ivar poola yaarendru, uur solla vendum.”

17th January 2007

My dear Puratchi Thalaivar,

Wherever you are, today is the day, ninety years ago (or is it?) you were born. You were sent here on a mission. A mission that you, only you, know what. We know some, we have seen some, we have read some, we have listened to some.

But there is more…only you know that. You were loved, you were respected, and you were despised. More loved than despised. Those despised you had issues, that’s all. But they will agree the power you vield over millions of hearts. The power of love.

How many just wasted their life away when they learned that you are no more. Why? What have you done to them? Those flickering images on screen. The seat of power that you sat on. That smile. That graceful wave of hand. The assurance of goodwill. The assurance that all will be alright, for you are here.

And then, you were gone. Blank. Tamil Nadu, Tamil film industry has not been the same again, good or bad. My father is a poor man. He had nothing to hand to us brothers, but the love for cinema. We inherited that plus a little bit of the greatest treasure of his called, “MGR Fanatiscm”.

In my teens, I was so absorbed by your films and songs. I am now a bigger fan of your ‘brother’ Nadigar Tilagam. But the funny thing is, now, after fifteen years, I have difficulty recalling lyrics of NT’s songs, but at the snap of the finger, I can recall the lyrics of all my favourite songs of yours.

Why? Then, I was crazy of you. Now, I am intrigued by you. I grab my hand on any literature about you. I learned so much about you. But the more I learn, the more I realise that I don’t know who you are.

You are, to us, what you want us to know. You kept the rest of you to yourself. And what we know is the image of one of the greatest person ever to live in this planet. That is all we know. And that is all we need to know.

Sometimes back, I swore never to write in this thread of yours…thanks to some unnecessary arguments. But I take that back. I take it back, because you wouldn’t like it. You would want me to learn from others in this thread, and share my own love for the world you created for us with the rest. I shall. I abide by your often spoken rule on ‘sharing’.

So, my dear Puratchi Thalaivar. Many happy returns of the day. You are not here, but you are there, somewhere, watching us kids with that enigmatic smile of yours.

Happy Birthday.

Your once fan, and now, student,

Rakesh Kumar
